City’s Iconic Performance Venue Blue Frog To Relocate
Iconic performance venue Blue Frog will move out of its current location in Lower Parel’s Mathuradas Mills Compound, the management announced today. The bar and restaurant, which is rumoured to replaced by Bangalore microbrewery Toit in December, is scouting for a new address in the city. Earlier this month, a notice on the homepage of Blue Frog’s website said that they were “actively looking to diversify into a secondary venue in North and South Mumbai – it could have a different flavour or avatar, we’re open to ideas and collaborations”.
Since it opened in December 2007, the club has frequently been hailed as the best music venue in the city, if not country, and hosted performances by a wide range of acts including such global superstars as Angelique Kidjo and Zakir Hussain. Four years ago, the venue, which began with the cause of championing original music, added cover nights to its weekday roster to help arrest falling footfalls.
Over its nine-year run, it has seen a change in management, the opening and shuttering of a Delhi branch and the launch of outposts in Pune and Bangalore, which continue to operate. In the interim, the Mathuradas Mills Compound has been occupied by a number of F&B establishments that also occasionally programme gigs such as Cafe Zoe, Todi Mill Social and Hoppipola. Soon the compound will also be the site of the Mumbai branch of popular Delhi music venue Summer House Cafe. Look out for announcements on Blue Frog’s line-up of farewell gigs for its current address and a report about its new location.
