Freedom Song: Independence-Themed Project ‘Different Trains 1947’ Will Premiere At The Magnetic Fields Festival
Four organisations from the UK, ‘artistic laboratory’ Metal, music label Warped Records, London venue Barbican Centre and online gig streaming platform Boiler Room and two enterprises from India, Delhi-based electronic music-focused website Wild City and Mumbai-based arts management company What About Art? will stage Different Trains 1947, an audio-visual presentation to mark the seventieth year of Indian Independence. The work is a collaboration between electronic music producers Actress aka Darren J. Cunningham from the UK and Sandunes aka Sanaya Ardeshir from Mumbai (both of whom played the first Boiler Room gig here in November 2016); British rock musician Jack Barnett of the band These New Puritans; and London-residing artists and filmmakers Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard.
While Different Trains 1947 will be an entirely original work, it takes its name and is inspired by American Western classical music composer Steve Reich’s Grammy-winning 1988 piece ‘Different Trains’, which has interviews with people in the US and Europe in which they recall train journeys taken during as well as immediately before and after World War II. Different Trains 1947 will premiere in Liverpool in September and in India at the 2017 edition of the Magnetic Fields festival in Rajasthan, which is organised by Wild City and will be held from Friday, December 15 to Sunday, December 17. See here for more information about Different Trains 1947; ticket and line-up details for Magnetic Fields are yet to be announced.
