Horns Up: Beloved Gig Venue Razzberry Rhinoceros To Reopen
Last year, Blue Frog sadly shut. However 2017 brings the happy news that Razzberry Rhinoceros, another one of Mumbai’s iconic erstwhile music venues, will reopen soon. Razz, as it was called, was the spot at which many of today’s Indian independent rock and metal stars honed their skills in the 1990s and early noughties, especially during the weekly Thursday gig nights. Located inside Juhu Hotel, the venue was converted into a banquet hall in 2005, after which enterprising bands and gig organisers began hiring it for shows until 2007 when the management stopped hosting concerts. Memorably, NH7 Weekender promoters Only Much Louder (OML) got Razz back for one night only in August 2011 for an all-star jam to announce the line-up for the second edition of the festival. In recent years, the lawns of Juhu Hotel have been occasionally rented out for events such as the MTV Bloc Party in 2015. In January this year, OML organised one of the Bacardi House Party series of shows, featuring bass music star Nucleya, at the new avatar of Razzberry Rhinoceros, which was being renovated at the time. That gig was only open to contest winners. Razz v2.0, we confirmed with the Juhu Hotel management, is slated to be launched as an all-day lounge on Sunday, February 26. The 2017 edition of the Tapped Craft Beer Festival will be held on the opening day. In a reflection the current musicscape, the events calendar is likely to feature a number of electronic music acts.
