New Folk And Fusion Music Festival Paddy Fields Will Be Held In The City In October

Mame Khan

Rajasthani folk singer Mame Khan will perform at the Paddy Fields music festival.

The city will get a new music festival next month courtesy of the New Standard Engineering Company Ltd. or Nesco, the company that’s perhaps best known for running the Bombay Exhibition Centre (BEC) in Goregaon. On Saturday, October 15 and Sunday, October 16, Nesco will host, at the BEC, the inaugural edition of Paddy Fields, a music festival dedicated to the genres of folk and fusion.

The line-up includes a number of the best-known exponents of both genres from across the country. Among the fusion or more precisely folk-fusion acts are Assamese singer-songwriter Papon aka Angaraag Mahanta; Dhruv Voyage, the group fronted by guitarist-composer Dhruv Ghanekar and featuring Assamese vocalist Kalpana Patowary; and Punjabi singing siblings Jyoti and Sultana Nooran, who’re known as the Nooran Sisters.

The representatives of more traditional folk music will be Rajasthani singer Mame Khan; Sufi quartet Chaar Yaar, helmed by Gurgaon-based polyglot Madan Gopal Singh; and Bengali husband and wife pair Gangadhar and Tulika. Also on the bill are a couple of popular names who aren’t immediately associated with folk or fusion: Hindi film music directors Salim and Sulaiman Merchant and Colonial Cousins aka the duo of composer Leslie Lewis and singer Hariharan whose return might bring a smile to the faces of many 1990s kids.

Unlike most music festivals, Paddy Fields will be a seated event. The festival, which has been curated by Indian record label veteran Atul Churamani’s Turnkey Music and Publishing, will be produced by Oranjuice Entertainment, the company behind the Mahindra Blues Festival and The Journey. Tickets for Paddy Fields, starting at Rs1,150 per person, will be sold on Bookmyshow.com from Thursday, September 15. See Paddyfields.in for more information.

Paddy Fields will take place from 5pm on Saturday, October 15 and Sunday, October 16 at the Bombay Convention and Exhibition Centre, Nesco Compound, off the Western Express Highway, opposite Mahananda Dairy, Goregaon (East). Get directions here.
