Open Season: Delhi’s Outdoor Film Screening Series Movies and Chill Comes To Mumbai

Movies and Chill at One Golden Mile in Delhi.

In culturally active cities the world over, summer is the season for outdoor cinema. Inspired by other places, the Sunset Cinema Club, a film club that operates in Delhi and Mumbai, initiated a festival of open-air movie screenings called Movies and Chill in Delhi in November last year. In space-strapped Mumbai, the company launched screenings at The Barking Deer, the brewpub in Lower Parel in February. The inaugural Mumbai edition of Movies and Chill will take place over three days from Friday, April 21 to Sunday, April 23 at the month-old bar Razzberry Rhinoceros in Juhu.

Jointly organised with Drinksonme, a nightlife-focused events company, the screenings will be held on the breezy, beach-facing lawns of Razzberry Rhinoceros. Romantic comedy Pretty Woman (1990) will be shown on Friday at 7.30pm; crime thriller The Usual Suspects (1995) on Saturday at 7.30pm; and the first part of Quentin Tarantino’s revenge drama Kill Bill (2003) on Sunday at 7.30pm. The cinema club typically showcases cult classics. The Mumbai selection, however, is fairly populist because the films were picked by way of a public poll on Sunset Cinema Club’s Facebook page.

Movies and Chill follows SteppinOut Movie Nights, another outdoor cinema screening series organised by Bangalore-based events company SteppinOut which launched here in March. At Movies and Chill, which will take place twice a year in Mumbai and Delhi, select food and drinks catered by Razzberry Rhinoceros will be sold from stalls flanking the screen. Five hundred viewers can be accommodated per day and seating (on the lawns and on a limited number of chairs) will be on a first come, first served basis.

Movies and Chill will take place from Friday, April 21 to Sunday, April 23 (gates will open at 6pm and the screening will start at 7.30pm) at Razzberry Rhinoceros, Juhu Hotel, near Mahesh Lunch Home, Juhu.
