Steven Wilson, Anoushka Shankar To Play The Pune Leg Of NH7 Weekender 2016
Just as the line-ups of the annual Bacardi NH7 Weekender festival are a reflection of music trends, the manner in which organisers Only Much Louder or OML roll out the roster is an indication of trends in social media. Last year, they got fans to announce the acts through a series of flyers posted on Twitter. For the 2016 edition, which will be held in Shillong, Hyderabad and Pune in October, November and December respectively, the bills were revealed through a relay of videos published by the performing artists on their own and the festival’s Facebook pages.
For the flagship Pune leg, which will be held at an as-yet undisclosed new venue this year, the international headliners cut across genres, offering something for every kind of fan except perhaps metalheads. British progressive rock pioneer Steven Wilson, who announced his plans to visit India at the end of October back in May, will headline the city as well as Shillong. UK-based sitar-playing world music star Anoushka Shankar; Swedish singer-songwriter Jose Gonzalez; veteran American hip hop DJ Premier, whose real name is Chris Martin; US electronic music producer RAC aka André Allen Anjos; and Welsh alternative rock band The Joy Formidable are among the other major international names playing the Pune edition.
This time around, the Bollywood contingent will be represented by composer Shankar Mahadevan who will stage his ‘My Country My Music‘ project at the event. A. R. Rahman will be represented too, through NAFS and Sempre Libera, Chennai-based vocal ensembles made up of students from his music school, the K. M. Conservatory. However the name that is likely to be discussed for days is that of Hindi film actor Farhan Akhtar who will perform in Shillong and Hyderabad. The appearance of Akhtar, whose musical abilities have been the subject of much debate, is not entirely unexpected as portions of his upcoming music-themed film Rock On!! 2 were shot at the 2015 instalment in Shillong. Alternative rock fans who grew up in the noughties will be pleasantly surprised by the presence of former US chart-toppers Vertical Horizon in the Shillong schedule. Here’s the line-up of all three editions:
