Watch An Award-Winning Short Film About Kurla Rapper Naezy
We first told you about rising Hindi hip hop star Naezy aka Naved Shaikh, when we wrote about ‘Mere Gully Mein‘, his collaboration with fellow Mumbai rapper Divine that celebrated their respective neighbourhoods in Kurla West and Andheri East. Last week, another video starring Naezy was posted on YouTube – Disha Rindani’s Bombay 70, which won Best Short Film at the Mumbai Film Festival last year. The nine-minute film, which is named after Kurla West’s pin code, is a profile of Naezy, who traded a life of petty crime as a teenager for a potential career in hip hop.
Among the things we learn about the 20-something artist is how his speed-rapping style owes a debt to Jamaican dancehall star Sean Paul and how he composes all his tracks on an iPad. The release of the video, which you can watch above, is well timed. Naezy will perform at Blue Frog on Thursday, August 20 at this month’s edition of Pepsi MTV Indies’ Ribbit series of free gigs, which will also feature sets by Mauj Maharaja and MC Manmeet Kaur and is listed to start at 9pm.
